Christine Eyene is an art historian, critic and curator. She is a Research Fellow in Contemporary Art at the University of Central Lancashire where she works on Making Histories Visible, an interdisciplinary visual arts research project documenting, supporting, and sharing creative practices from the cultural diversity in Britain and globally through collaborations with artists, art professionals, independent organisations and major public institutions.

Her areas of research and curatorial practice encompass contemporary African and Diaspora arts, Black British arts, gendered art discourses, and non-object-based art practices notably sound art. Her other interests include: socially-engaged initiatives, urban culture, music, design, and new media. As an art writer, her articles and essays have been published in printed and online art magazines, journals, exhibition catalogues and art books.

Her most recent project is SOUNDS LIKE HER: Gender, Sound Art and Sonic Cultures, a New Art Exchange UK-touring exhibition and publication (2017-2020). Previous international exhibitions include Summer of Photography 2018 with RESIST! The 1960s protests, photography and visual legacy, BOZAR, Brussels. She has also curated exhibitions as part of: Printemps de Septembre 2016, Espace Croix Baragnon, Toulouse; EVA International 2016, Ormston House, Limerick; Curator’s Series # 8, David Robert Arts Foundation, London, 2015; Summer of Photography 2014, BOZAR, Brussels; 10th DAK’ART – Biennale of Contemporary African Art, Dakar, 2012; 3rd PHOTOQUAI – Biennial of World Images, Paris, 2011; GWANZA 2011 – Month of Photography, National Gallery of Zimbabwe, Harare.

In 2017, Christine Eyene was invited to take up the artistic direction of the Biennale Internationale de Casablanca. This nomination marks a turning point in the history of biennale with the introduction of new orientations, including the creation of a new team, and the development of new local and international partnerships. She has also initiated the Incubation Programme consisting of artists residencies, workshops, talks and exhibitions at the BIC Project Space, the biennale’s new venue in Casablanca. This programme aims to further anchor the biennale within its local cultural landscape and reach out to a diversity of audiences ahead of the 5th Biennale Internationale de Casablanca.
